SOME 350 flat dwellers at Taman Warisan in Muar are heaving sighs of relief now that the local authority has cleared a rubbish dump in front of their homes.

Muar Town Council has placed large stones to block the road leading to the open rubbish dump.

Residents living in terrace houses nearby are also happier to be living in cleaner surroundings.

Taskforce committee member Noor Azam Mohd Arjan said Muar Town Council cleaners began clearing up the rubbish a day after reports about the dirty state of the area were published.

He said the road shoulder at Jalan Junid was strewn with rubbish and solid waste.

Apart from cleaning up the place, the local authority had also blocked the road leading to the rubbish dump.

"Big stones have been placed across the road to prevent vehicles from entering the area.

"Previously, apart from cars and motorcycles, those who dumped their rubbish used vans and pickup trucks to transport their rubbish," Noor Azam said.

On March 23, Berita Harian highlighted the grouses of Taman Warisan residents who complained they could no longer stand the stench from the open rubbish dump.

Some had even resorted to staying indoors to avoid breathing in the fumes.

Residents said they were forced to shut their doors and windows during the day because they could not stand the stench.

A visit to the area showed that the road shoulder had now been covered with red earth.

The road leading to the dumpsite has also been blocked with large stones.

However, Noor Azam said residents were now facing new problems.

He said the town council has removed the rubbish but has failed to provide an alternative dumpsite.

The council, he added, has also prohibited residents from throwing their rubbish there, warning that a compound would be imposed otherwise.

"Our problem is that flat dwellers have nowhere to dispose of their rubbish as solid waste company SWM Sdn Bhd only collects rubbish from terrace houses."
